You will be met on arrival and the airport and driven to your hotel, for your first couple of nights in Myanmar.
We include a morning walking tour through the back streets of downtown Yangon with one of Asia’s most impressive collections of late nineteenth and early twentieth- century buildings, finishing at a restaurant for lunch.
We also include an evening excursion to the illuminated Shwedagon Pagoda, the most sacred and impressive Buddhist site for the people of Myanmar.
Yangon - Mandalay
Free morning in Yangon; afternoon transfer to the station to board the night train to Mandalay, a journey of 388 miles.
Schedules are subject to change. The 3.00pm departure now consists of Chinese coaches, delivered in January 2016, but there is no longer a sleeper service on this train which arrives into Mandalay at 5.00am. The 5.00pm train has sleeping carriages and a restaurant; this train arrives at 7.45am.
You will be met on arrival in Mandalay and driven to your hotel.
Afternoon excursion to the Mahamuni pagoda and to the village of Amarapura with a walk through the Mahagandayon monastery complex with hundreds of monks, a visit one of the small weaving workshops and a walk over the teak Ubein Bridge across Taungthaman Lake.
Transfer from your hotel to the Myan Gyan Jetty in Mandalay for an hour's boat journey along the Ayeyarwady River to Mingun. Visit the uncompleted temple (stupa) which was started in 1790 and for which a giant bell was cast (1808-1810). The return journey downstream is a little faster.
Afternoon excursion to the top of Mandalay hill for rewarding views over the city. Continue to the Atumashi and the Shwenandaw monasteries which are excellent examples of the architecture and craftwork of this region and end with a visit to Kuthodaw Pagoda with 729 white marble tablets, known as the world's largest book.
Mandalay to Bagan
You can travel to Bagan by plane, bus, train or by boat along the Ayeyarwaddy River. Please discuss your preferences with us.
We will arrange transfers from your hotel in Mandalay and arrival transfer to your hotel in Bagan to fit.
A full day tour of the best known temples in the area including the Ananda, Dhammayangyi, Sulamani, and Thatbyinnyu. Lunch will be included at a local restaurant and around 4pm we continue the tour by horse and cart to the Pyathagyi pagoda for sunset.
Morning visit to the busy market in New Bagan before continuing to Minnanthu, a quiet and peaceful temple area which is often completely deserted for a picnic lunch.
Free afternoon and evening.
Bagan – Heho – Inle lake
Departure transfer to the airport for your flight to Heho where you will be met and driven to Inle Lake, surrounded by traditional Shan villages and houses on stilts.
A tour by motorboat around the lake includes floating gardens and a stop for a cup of tea at a local house. There are markets to visit, an option to visit a local cheroot workshop (where Burmese cigars are made), the Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda and Intha Heritage house where Burmese cats are bred and to a weaving workshop. Lunch is included.
Inle lake – Heho – Yangon
Half day excursion to the ruins of Indein, south of the lake, which are partly covered by vegetation making the area resemble a pagoda forest. The excursion includes a visit to a school in the village of Tha Ley and lunch in local house.
Return to Heho airport in time to check in for the flight to Yangon where you will be met and driven to your hotel for your last night.
Transfer from your hotel to the airport to check-in for your flight home.
